Arrive in Phnom Penh by flight. Phnom Penh retains its traditional Khmer and colonial charm. French villas along tree-lined boulevards remind visitors that the city was once considered the gem of Southeast Asia. Recent political changes have helped fuel an economic boom, with new hotels, restaurants, bars, and nightclubs springing up around the city.

Visit the Royal Palace compound, built in 1866 by the predecessors of King Norodom. It is one of the city's most prominent landmarks, featuring impressive and colorful Khmer-style architecture. Nearby, the Silver Pagoda (also known as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha) houses numerous Buddha statues and displays decorated with diamonds, emeralds, gold, and silver.

Continue to the Independence Monument, constructed in 1954 to commemorate Cambodia's independence from French colonial rule. Then visit the National Museum, a distinctive red building featuring beautiful Khmer architecture. Built in 1917, it houses more than 5,000 art objects made from sandstone, bronze, silver, copper, wood, and other materials.

Next, visit Tuol Sleng Prison (Genocide Museum), which served as a secret security facility under the Khmer Rouge regime. S-21 stands for "Security Office 21."

Today, we travel by road from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap. Along the way, we will witness the everyday lives of Cambodians as we pass through interesting provincial towns, bucolic villages, and delightful scenery. This is no ‘freeway dash’, as we will often slow down to let cows and water buffalo wander across the road, pass horse-drawn carriages, and see schoolchildren walking and cycling to and from school.

We may choose to stop in Skoun, also known as ‘Spider Ville’ because deep-fried tarantulas are a local delicacy. Are you adventurous enough to try one?

Along the way, we may also stop in Kompong Kdei to see Spean Pratos, an ancient Angkorian bridge.

Before arriving in Siem Reap, we will explore Kampong Khleang, the largest floating village near Siem Reap, which attracts relatively few tourists. Depending on the season, the experience will vary. During the dry season, from January to July, you can walk among the stilts supporting houses that rise up to 10 meters above the ground. In the wet season, when the lake reaches its peak level, the water rises to within one or two meters of the floors of the houses. A local family will take you on a boat tour to discover the beauty of these houses before we continue to Siem Reap.

We begin our visit with Prasat Kravan, a group of five brick towers built for Hindu worship in 921. They are notable for the bas-reliefs carved into the bricks of their interior walls.

Next, we visit Banteay Kdei, a large Buddhist temple dating from the second half of the 12th century. It is surrounded by four concentric walls, with the outer walls measuring 500 by 700 meters. Nearby, Srah Srang is a basin measuring 800 by 400 meters, with a small island in the middle where only the stone base of what was once a wooden temple remains.

We then visit Ta Prohm, famous for its appearance in Tomb Raider. Abandoned to the elements, the temple serves as a reminder that while empires rise and fall, the untamed power of nature continues, indifferent to the dramas of human history. Left much as it was when ‘discovered’ by French explorer Henri Mouhot in 1860, Ta Prohm features tentacle-like tree roots that slowly engulf the surviving stone structures. It is a striking example of how humans once conquered nature to create, only for nature to gradually reclaim what they built.

Next, we move on to Ta Keo, built by Jayavarman V, who ruled from 968 to 1001. It was the first Angkorian monument built entirely of sandstone and was dedicated to Shiva. The summit of its central tower stands 50 meters high and is surrounded by four lower towers.

We then visit Thommanon, a temple that mirrors Chau Say Tevoda, located just to the north. Built around the same time, the two temples share a similar layout. Thommanon is dedicated to Shiva and Vishnu. Chau Say Tevoda, built during the second quarter of the 12th century opposite Thommanon, is also dedicated to Shiva and Vishnu.

We continue through the rural countryside to the small but beautiful temple of Banteay Srei. Built largely of pink sandstone, a harder stone that allows for more intricate carvings and better withstands the passage of time, the temple offers an excellent opportunity to capture photographs of its delicate and detailed carvings.

Our final temple visit is Banteay Samre. Its rose-colored sandstone walls are adorned with carvings and bas-reliefs that rank among the finest examples of Angkorian art.

In the evening, enjoy dinner accompanied by an Apsara dance performance at a local restaurant.

For travelers eager to experience Cambodia’s cultural heritage, no visit is complete without attending at least one traditional Khmer dance performance. These performances are often referred to as “Apsara Dance” after one of the most popular classical dance pieces. Traditional Khmer dance is perhaps best described as “dance-drama,” as the performances do more than showcase dance movements; they also convey stories and messages.

After breakfast, we begin our visit to the ancient capital of Angkor Thom, dating from the 12th century.

We enter through the South Gate and visit Bayon Temple, renowned for its 54 towers decorated with more than 200 smiling faces of Avalokitesvara. Next, we explore Baphuon Temple, located just north of Bayon, a pyramidal structure representing the mythical Mount Meru.

We continue to Phimeanakas Temple, situated within a large complex that once served as a royal palace. Then, we visit the Terrace of the Elephants, a platform where the king and his officials watched public events and held audiences. Nearby, Preah Palilay Temple, an older temple nestled deep in the forest near Angkor Thom, offers a peaceful stop. On the way back, you may see monks sprinkling holy water on visitors.

We then continue to the famous Angkor Wat temple. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992, Angkor Wat is renowned for its beauty and grandeur. It features one of the world's longest continuous bas-reliefs, running along the outer gallery walls and depicting stories from Hindu mythology.

Enjoy a one-hour foot massage before strolling along the lively Pub Street, where you can find numerous bars serving refreshing drinks, or browse the shops at Angkor Night Market.
